Rara National Park is located in the North-Western high mountains of Nepal, about 370 km. north-west of Kathmandu. The Rara Lake, situated at an elevation of 2990 m., which is also the main feature of the park. The park is Nepal’s smallest protected area and covers an area of 106 sq. km. An area of 158 sq. km outside the park boundary is a buffer zone.

Rara Lake, also known as Mahendra Tal, is the biggest lake in Nepal. At 167 metres deep and 10.8 square kilometres in area, the lake is oval-shaped with an east-west axis with a maximum length 5 kilometres, and 3 kilometres wide. The lake is surrounded by richly forested hills of coniferous origin.
